What is the difference between our carbon steel and our UHC (Ultra High Carbon) steel?
Our standard carbon steel with 0,8% carbon is anything but standard. This steel is our most trusted and used. Hard, durable and reliable - it is made to get the work done, and easy to get back to full sharpness by yourself.
Our own Ultra High Carbon (UHC) steel contains 1.8 - 2.0% carbon. The Roselli UHC steel is considered one of the hardest steel qualities in the world - with our UHC models measuring about 62-63 HRC (Hardness Rockwell C). This level of strength makes an extreme sharpness possible, and an edge which will stay sharp for a very very long time.
Can I get my Roselli customized?
Of course! We can engrave any knife or axe for you, if you want to preserve a memory or personalize a gift. On every product’s page there is a field where you type in what you’d like your engraving to say before you add it to your cart.
We engrave by hand on our knife blades and axe heads. If you want to engrave something more advanced such as a company logo, we can laser engrave such. With the laser engraving we have the possibility to engrave the blade, handle and the sheath. Contact us at info@roselli.fi for more information.
Take notice that we don’t offer any engraving on our Damascus knives.
I'm left handed — can I get a customized sheath?
If you're left handed it is possible for you to receive a reversed sheath for your Roselli, to fit you better. Just make sure to inform us in the order notes before checkout.
Carbon steel vs. stainless steel blades?
Simplified you can explain; Carbon steel is a harder material than stainless steel. Due to the hardness of a carbon steel knife you will have a knife that is sharper and keeps the sharpness longer than a stainless steel knife.
What is the difference between Wootz and Damascus steel?
The original Wootz steel (originated in South India) is characterized by a pattern of bands and high carbon content. Wootz steel was amongst the finest in the world. It is the metal that was used to fashion weapons such as the famous Damascus blades of the Middle Ages. Many claim that modern attempts to duplicate the metal have not been entirely successful due to differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques.
The "Modern Damascus" is an interpretation of the Wootz steel pattern and refers mostly to the pattern in the steel, rather than the actual composition of the steel. Our own handmade patterned welding Damascus blade is the result of over 1000 layers of steel.

When creating Roselli UHC steel Heimo Roselli had the intention to create a high carbon steel (similar to the Wootz steel) with exceptional performance. In the beginning he called these knife blades Roselli Wootz, but some time back they are now just called Roselli UHC. Some resellers still use the old name Wootz, but the steel is the same as the UHC steel.
What is the difference between full tang and partial tang?
The tang of the knife is the unsharpened part of the steel blade that goes into the handle.
A full tang extends the full length of the grip-portion of a handle, versus a partial tang which does not. A full tang may or may not be as wide as the handle itself, but will still run the full length of the handle. A full tang knife has a steel blade that runs through the whole handle. The two pieces of handle that surround the knife are fastened by two metallic rivets.
A partial tang is the complete opposite with a steel blade that only extends partially through the handle. Its potential is its lightweight handle. A partial tang has a complete seal against moisture and reduces the thermal expansion in the grip/tang.
Now you may wonder if this makes the quality differ between our full tang and partial tang knives? No - it's more a choice of what you personally prefer and for what purpose you use the knife.
What knife should I buy for what purpose?
Our knives serve different purposes and it is often a matter of taste when choosing your knife. Just send us an email at info@roselli.fi and we´ll help you to find the right one.

Care and maintenance

How do I care for my blade?
What to do and what not to do when caring for your blade? It's not rocket science but knowing how could be useful in the confusing jungle of tips and tricks.
Here’s our three easy steps to start with.
1. First of all, never ever wash your knife in the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergent is very abrasive, and the wash cycle will take the sharp edge right off your knife.
2. Always keep your blade dry. When out in the field - take that extra 10 seconds to wipe it dry before you put it back in the sheath. Leaving knives out to air-dry will make them dull faster.
3. When at home, you could wipe the blade with some oil. Olive, vegetable, canola or sunflower oil works just fine. You could also use a light machine oil like the one used for sharpening.

How do I maintain my handle?
Over time, our handles made of curly birch might need some extra care to last a lifetime. Linseed oil for example provides effective protection against dirt and moisture.

How do I adjust the sheath?
Leather is a natural material that stretches as the years go by. When your knife sheath has started to come loose and to prevent your knife from falling out, here is a tip on how to fix it.

What angle do I use when sharpening?
Our knives are hand grinded and we are aiming to have the bevel at around 21 degree. When grinding our knives the easiest way to get the right angel is just to follow our angel on the bevel.
